God's Design, Your Purpose
St. Helena Church Women's Ministries hosted Patti Cotton Pettis and her power-packed two part seminar entitled God's Design, Your Purpose.

Combining her passion for creativity and meaningful work, with the desire to help others become all they were meant to be, Patti led participants through a series of exercises which helped them better define their personal vision, mission, and ministries.

The NAD Women's Ministries website lists a myriad of efforts, vision, and missions for all women. Buried in the site is the admonition for Women's Ministries teams nationwide to assist other ladies to develop their own specific ministries, and to mentor and to build networks. Guidelines are supplied for the development of personal mission statements.

The April 2009 seminar developed as factions of St. Helena's Women's Ministries team searched the Internet to find ways of strengthening their group for service to Christ and to their sisters. After examining the guidelines and admonitions on the NAD site both individually and corporately in a small group study, Jenny Oliver contacted her sister, Patti.

Patti's experience and influence is worldwide, greatly affecting even her own family. "I know it's true that often a person of persuasion is not effective with those who are closest to them, but in our family, we are constantly amazed at and impacted by the things our sister accomplishes. Of course," her sister laughs, "she is the eldest. She's always trying to get us to think outside the box and to figure out what God wants us to DO, not just sit and experience life."

Patti is the Executive Director of Philanthropy at Loma Linda University Medical Center. Holding a master's degree in English literature, she is currently completing a post-graduate degree in organizational management. She is a certified mediator for conflict in the workplace, and is a leader-facilitator in the Amherst Writers and Artists method of generative writing. She is a member of the International Coaching Federation.

The St. Helena event began on Sabbath afternoon, with worship in song led by Lori Cotton Thomas. After three
hours of discussion and exploration, the ladies feasted on haystax. The following morning a potluck brunch started the session, then the ladies got to work developing their list of personal core values, strengths God has given them, and expressing how they would use these to make the world a better place. They also each determined their personal theme to support their mission for 2009.

The response was enthusiastic as women were able to hone and express ideas often buried deep within, gaining momentum towards personal goals and truly discovering how God means to use them.

Mission: Nearly Accomplished. Look out, world!
